Humans Still Teach

Designing the Human–AI Partnership in Course Design

What happens at Prompt 37?

The challenge isn’t generating the next answer. It’s preserving the reasoning that got us there.

  • Iterations happen. Earlier decisions matter.

  • AI accelerates change. New discoveries change old artifacts.

  • Prompting is easy. Design continuity is hard.

EXPAND

AI increases the possibility space.

Generate, critique, compare, expose assumptions.

PRESERVE

Humans maintain design memory.

Decisions, rationale, constraints, unresolved questions, canonical state.

EVOLVE

Humans decide what should change.

Revise, propagate, trace consequences, inspect quality.

AI accelerates iteration. Humans preserve intention.

Steal from the robot. Shine as the human.

REIMAGINE

AI accelerates restructuring.

Humans renegotiate the real design problem.

TRACE

AI expands audit coverage.

Humans judge whether alignment was meaningful.

INSPECT

AI accelerates QA and correction.

Humans validate the learner experience.

AI is very good at producing the next thing.

Another draft. Another version. Another possibility.

The harder work is maintaining coherence across the whole design process: remembering why a decision was made, knowing which artifacts depend on it, recognizing when a new discovery should trigger revision, and deciding which changes actually improve the learner experience.

That is where the human role becomes more important, not less.

The future of course design is not human or AI. It is the quality of the partnership between them.
